The Value of Brachytherapy in Radiation Oncology

Abstract

|
It is well known fact that radiation therapy plays a very important role in management of cancer. But with external irradiation, only 50% of patients can have local control of the disease.
As a methode to improve this poor control rate, Brachytherapy has become attractive in the field of radiation therapy. By´ inserting radioactive materials into cancerous tissue using afterloading technique, one can increase the local control rate of cancer by being able to deliver high dose of radiation without accompaning side effects like in conventional external radiation therapy.
This article discusses physical and radiobiological basis of brachytherapy and its clinical applications.
